gbi carried out the environmental impact study for the multiplatform solid waste management project of the Intermunicipal Waste Management Board (RITMR) of the La Matapédia and La Mitis Regional County Municipalities.
This study, submitted to the Bureau of Public Hearings on the Environment (BAPE), serves as the starting point for a major development project in the Bas‑du‑Saint‑Laurent region.
An integrated approach to solid waste management
The multiplatform project demonstrates a modern and sustainable approach to solid waste management by combining three components: engineered landfilling, composting, and a recycling center.
It also includes advanced leachate treatment using membrane technology, ensuring the protection of natural environments and compliance with environmental standards.
As part of this project, the gbi–SNC‑Lavalin consortium conducted a comprehensive environmental impact study to support the planning and implementation of the various infrastructures, with a focus on sustainable development for the communities of La Matapédia and La Mitis.
The multiplatform features an open-air composting area, designed to process between 2,000 and 3,000 tonnes of organic materials per year, collected through the brown-bin program. This simple and cost-effective solution promotes the recovery of organic materials while minimizing the environmental impacts associated with their management.
