Marie-Ève Bernard-O’Breham : From elite sports to purpose-driven engineering

Marie-Ève Bernard-O’Breham, EIT

Initially drawn to physiotherapy, Marie-Ève Bernard-O’Breham ultimately chose engineering, guided by a growing interest in biomedical technologies and later in electrical systems.

With a father and sister who are, respectively, an electrical engineer and a civil engineer, one might think her path was set. But it was her final capstone project at Polytechnique Montréal that truly sparked her passion for building electrical systems. From a young age, sports have played a central role in Marie-Ève’s life. She completed a sports-study program in high school before joining the Carabins university soccer team. Balancing intense training with engineering studies was no easy feat, but the challenge helped her develop strong personal discipline, sharp organizational skills, and effective time management. Beyond performance, sports have always been a way for her to disconnect, recenter, and maintain a healthy life balance. Even today, she remains committed to an active lifestyle and is currently training for a new personal challenge: her very first half-marathon this fall.

“What I truly appreciate is the spirit of collaboration within the team. Regardless of experience level, everyone actively contributes to the projects.”

Marie-Ève joined gbi in 2023 and quickly found her place within a team of seasoned technicians and intermediate to senior engineers. What stands out to her most is the warm welcome she received, the hands-on learning opportunities, and the trust placed in her to take on exciting challenges right from the start.

Among the standout projects she’s contributed to, Marie-Ève highlights the renovation of the pool at John Abbott College, an aging facility located at the heart of a sprawling campus. It was a technically complex project that pushed her to grow and apply her skills in a real-world context. She primarily works on projects related to schools, pools, and residential complexes.

What she finds especially rewarding is contributing to the concrete improvement of school environments by helping to make them more functional, safe and welcoming for both students and staff. It’s the feeling of making a real difference, in a smart and lasting way.

What does she take away from her experience at gbi ?

Energy, versatility, and excellence.
