CHUM Research Center

CHUM Research Center

Contribute to the construction of a world-class hospital research centre in the heart of Montréal, that is the goal of the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM).

A true hub of health innovation, this unique complex in Canada brings together more than 1,300 researchers, professionals, and students working in fields such as oncology, cardiometabolic health, neuroscience, immunology, and global health.

Developed through a public-private partnership (PPP), the project involved the design and construction of a 70,000 m² building featuring two modern towers of 16 and 6 storeys. These volumes house a variety of spaces, offices, laboratories, an auditorium, an animal facility, clinical research areas, and public spaces, all connected by two underground tunnels that ensure smooth circulation of people and services.

Meeting ambitious engineering challenges

The CRCHUM stands out for the complexity of its mechanical and electrical systems, designed to meet the demanding requirements of cutting-edge research.

LEED® Gold certified, the building achieves remarkable energy performance, with an estimated 28 % reduction in energy consumption compared to the reference building defined by the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB).

Among the major challenges were the design of lightweight backfill for the Viger tunnel to meet the load limits set by the MTQ, the coordination of multiple utility service entries, and the integration of a tunnel connecting the CRCHUM to the Champ-de-Mars metro station in collaboration with the STM.

A harmonious and functional urban design

The integration of the project into its urban environment involved a complete overhaul of the surrounding infrastructure. The work also included road geometry, layout, and drainage for Viger Est, Sanguinet, Saint-Antoine, and Guy-Frégault streets, as well as the installation of a porte-cochère with access control. Functional areas were created for the daycare and truck maneuvering, while meticulous landscaping completes the site, enhancing its long-term quality and sustainability.
