Westmount Recreation Centre

Designing a cultural and sports center capable of maximizing urban space while meeting the highest standards of sustainability was a significant challenge.

gbi met this challenge with the Westmount Recreation Center, an innovative project that combines an underground ice rink, swimming pools, tennis courts, and multifunctional spaces, all while preserving as much green space in the park as possible.

An innovative and sustainable project

Located in the southwest of Westmount Park, the project required the demolition of existing facilities to create an entirely new complex.

Designed to achieve LEED® C+CB Gold certification, the center is based on an integrated approach to sustainability and energy efficiency. Construction, which began in 2012, spanned 18 months in an active environment that required meticulous coordination.

A world-first achievement recognized

This project allowed gbi to create the world’s first underground sports center while returning a significant portion of green space to the park. The complex’s innovative design was recognized by the Municipal Ovation Award from the Union of Quebec Municipalities, highlighting gbi’s ability to combine engineering, sustainability, and land optimization in municipal and recreational projects.
