At the forefront of techniques and processes, gbi was selected by the CISSS des Laurentides to design a mobile medical device reprocessing unit, a first in Quebec for this type of specialized equipment.

The project involved setting up sterilization equipment to increase the capacity of hospitals that either lack the space to add this component or are undergoing renovations. At the heart of the project lies its core innovation: mobility. Both purified water and instrument air are produced within the unit itself. The design complies with current standards, which are much stricter than previous ones regarding the quality of purified water and instrument air pressure. A ventilation unit capable of ensuring high-level dehumidification and significant cooling capacity was also installed.

A logistics challenge

The gbi teams worked tirelessly on the design of this unit, which integrates electromechanical systems and medical devices.

With dimensions comparable to a 1,600 sq. ft. single-storey house, the number of modules had to be minimized to ensure the unit’s mobility. The layout was carefully designed to limit the amount of piping and equipment crossing the joints in the mechanical room. In a hospital setting, a typical MDRU (Medical Device Reprocessing Unit) generally occupies between 2,500 and 3,000 sq. ft., whereas this one is only 1,600 sq. ft., including the mechanical room.
