Saint-Michel Environmental Complex
Saint-Michel Environmental Complex
2021

The new leachate treatment process at the Saint-Michel Environmental Complex (CESM) aims to remove ammoniacal nitrogen in order to comply with discharge criteria imposed by the new environmental regulations. This strategic project contributes to the sustainable improvement of the City of Montréal’s environmental infrastructure.
The facility integrates a continuous, fully aerobic nitrification system using suspended media biological reactors (SMBRMD technology by Mabarex). This solution ensures efficient and robust treatment of ammoniacal nitrogen contained in the leachate.
Odour management is provided through an inorganic media biofiltration system, combined with a 20-metre-high exhaust stack, ensuring both operational performance and seamless integration into the existing site.
Site Integration and Environmental Performance
Special attention was given to the integration of the facility within the CESM environment.
The project includes:
- a green roof,
- site-adapted landscaping,
- strategies aimed at reducing the overall environmental footprint.
Energy efficiency was a key focus throughout the design process, in alignment with the site’s sustainable development objectives.

Integrated and Multidisciplinary Design
The design and construction of the new leachate treatment facility were carried out using a collaborative approach, bringing together gbi’s expertise in civil engineering, structure, environment, building mechanics, and process mechanics.
The project was developed in partnership with Poirier Fontaine Architectes, Filtrum, and Mabarex inc., enabling optimal integration of technical, architectural, and environmental solutions.
gbi’s Involvement
gbi was involved throughout all key phases of the project:
- Preliminary study
- Concept development and preliminary design
- Final plans and specifications
- Construction services
- Construction supervision
A Commitment to Environmental Stewardship
gbi is proud to contribute to the City of Montréal’s water treatment and odour management efforts by integrating innovative and sustainable technologies into its projects, benefiting both the environment and the community.
