Saint-Michel Environmental Complex

The new leachate treatment process at the Saint-Michel Environmental Complex (CESM) aims to remove ammoniacal nitrogen in order to comply with discharge criteria imposed by the new environmental regulations. This strategic project contributes to the sustainable improvement of the City of Montréal’s environmental infrastructure.

The facility integrates a continuous, fully aerobic nitrification system using suspended media biological reactors (SMBRMD technology by Mabarex). This solution ensures efficient and robust treatment of ammoniacal nitrogen contained in the leachate.

Odour management is provided through an inorganic media biofiltration system, combined with a 20-metre-high exhaust stack, ensuring both operational performance and seamless integration into the existing site.

Site Integration and Environmental Performance

Special attention was given to the integration of the facility within the CESM environment.

The project includes:

  • a green roof,
  • site-adapted landscaping,
  • strategies aimed at reducing the overall environmental footprint.

Energy efficiency was a key focus throughout the design process, in alignment with the site’s sustainable development objectives.
