Saint-Antoine Street in Contrecœur
2021

To prevent wastewater overflows at its pumping station, the City of Contrecœur commissioned gbi to design and size new sanitary and storm sewer lines under Saint-Antoine Street, in order to efficiently serve the surrounding area.
As part of the separation of the combined sewer network in this area, gbi developed an innovative six-phase master plan to address the overflow issues at Contrecœur’s wastewater treatment plant.

An essential infrastructure project
The project enabled the separation of stormwater from sanitary sewage, while directing rainwater from Rue Saint-Antoine straight to the Saint Lawrence River, located to the west. The engineering team also designed a stormwater outfall behind the town hall, ensuring safe discharge in compliance with environmental standards.
Compliance with environmental standards
The project strictly meets the requirements of the Ministry of the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change (MELCC) regarding the quality of stormwater discharge. Each low-intensity rainfall event, based on a 1-in-10-year calculation, must undergo treatment covering 60 % of the suspended solids across the entire watershed.
Protecting local wildlife
Furthermore, to protect local wildlife, the work was scheduled exclusively between September 1 and March 1, in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP). This timeframe prevents disturbances to threatened or vulnerable species such as the copper redhorse, the grass pickerel, the map turtle, as well as muskrats and waterfowl (geese, Canada geese, and ducks) during nesting or migration periods.
gbi’s expertise and innovation
Thanks to its expertise in water and sewer networks and its methodical approach, gbi delivered a sustainable, safe, and environmentally responsible infrastructure project. The modernization of the sewer lines on Rue Saint-Antoine in Contrecœur stands as a concrete example of gbi’s commitment to designing innovative solutions for communities while adhering to the strictest environmental standards.
