gbi carried out the expansion of Cégep de L’Assomption, a 4,500 m² project spread over five storeys including a basement, extending the wing from Dorval Street to L’Ange-Gardien Boulevard.
This expansion was designed to meet the needs of a growing institution while minimizing the impact of the construction work on the college’s daily activities. The new addition offers modern and functional spaces, including new classrooms and laboratories designed in accordance with strict health, safety and contamination-control standards.
Students also benefit from a welcoming café, a gymnasium and a multipurpose room that promote well-being and student life. The project also includes a childcare centre and a clinic dedicated to the orthotic and prosthetic technology program, providing facilities tailored to the institution’s specific needs.
Innovative technical solutions
The project stands out for several technical innovations.
The science laboratories, including the corneal lens preparation room, were designed in accordance with contamination-control and occupational health and safety standards. A new central air system with energy recovery using reverse-flow and variable air volume cassettes provides an impressive 90 % energy efficiency.
To achieve the energy performance objectives, gbi implemented a geothermal system with twelve wells, requiring precise coordination of the drilling in a confined space at the center of the courtyard. In addition, the presence of a high water table necessitated the planning of an under-slab drainage system to prevent water infiltration into the building.
Despite a tight schedule and the complexity of working in an occupied environment, gbi successfully delivered a sustainable, functional building that harmonizes with the existing architectural heritage. Through integrated design, innovative energy-efficient solutions, and meticulous project management, Cégep de L’Assomption now benefits from a modern and high-performing learning environment that reflects its educational mission.
