As part of the modernization of critical infrastructure at the Champlain dry dock, gbi is supporting Chantier Davie in improving the performance, reliability, and safety of systems essential to its shipbuilding operations.
The mandate includes both the modernization of the leak pumping system and the integration of new handling equipment within the main suction tunnel. This integrated approach is designed to optimize operations in a complex industrial environment while extending the service life of existing infrastructure.
Assessment and Upgrade of Pumping Systems
gbi conducted a comprehensive assessment of existing installations to define the client’s needs and establish design criteria for the modernization of the pumping system. This process identified several key challenges, including aging equipment, reliability risks, water infiltration issues, and concerns related to the condition of concrete structures.
The mandate also includes detailed inspections, 3D scans of existing installations (point cloud surveys), and the development of preliminary concepts supported by a 3D digital model. A Class 4 cost estimate was also prepared to support planning and decision-making.
Optimization of Maintenance Operations
In parallel, gbi designed a monorail system integrated into the main suction tunnel to facilitate maintenance and handling operations in a constrained environment. The system includes a monorail beam assembly and a motorized trolley and hoist with a lifting capacity of 2,500 kg.
The design was based on a thorough assessment of existing structures, including concrete inspections and core sampling, ensuring safe and durable integration within infrastructure that is over 100 years old.
An Approach Adapted to a Complex Industrial Environment
The project stands out due to the complexity of its technical and operational constraints, including:
- limited access to work areas due to ongoing shipyard operations
- the presence of aging infrastructure and obsolete equipment
- high requirements for system reliability, safety, and performance
- the need to design equipment capable of withstanding demanding operating conditions, including high pumping capacities
This integrated approach enhances current operations while positioning the facility for future shipbuilding requirements.
