Transport

This project involves supporting the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility in planning a roadside study aimed at collecting data on interurban freight transportation by truck in Québec.
The study incorporates an innovative approach that combines data collected through the roadside study with GPS data in order to obtain a more accurate, reliable, and representative picture of freight movements.
The mandate includes defining the methodological, technical, and financial elements required for the detailed planning of the study, including data processing, traffic counting, and the development of models enabling the integration of roadside study and GPS data. The objective is to produce a study plan clearly demonstrating how the Ministry’s objectives will be achieved, while taking operational and safety considerations into account.
gbi’s Mandate
The services provided by the gbi team include:
- Project management and coordination of activities
- Study planning and definition of the methodological approach
- Preparation of temporary traffic control plans for study sites
- Data processing and analysis
- Geospatial analysis
- Road safety considerations
This mandate takes place in a context where no comparable experience has been conducted in Québec for many years. gbi will leverage the technological advances now available to support the project.

Challenges and Particularities

The project stands out for its high level of complexity, mainly due to the lack of recent reference documentation in Québec regarding studies of this type.
The rapid evolution of technologies related to the collection and use of transportation data also represented a significant challenge.
To address these issues, the teams conducted a review of national and international best practices, as well as a technology watch on available tools. This process made it possible to define an updated approach adapted to the Ministry’s current needs, while ensuring the consistency, reliability, and security of the data collected.
