Faced with operational challenges affecting the performance of its leachate treatment system, gbi supported the client through a comprehensive diagnostic process and the implementation of targeted solutions aimed at improving operational efficiency.
The mandate began with an in-depth analysis of key issues, including clogging in the water line to the treatment basins, suspended solids in the settling pond, and phosphorus concentrations in the effluent discharged to the receiving environment.
Based on this assessment, gbi developed tailored intervention strategies to prioritize actions, evaluate their impact on existing operations, and recommend effective mitigation measures.
From Assessment to Detailed Engineering
Building on the diagnostic phase, gbi carried out the detailed engineering for the addition of new caustic soda (NaOH 50%) lines, a targeted solution designed to enhance treatment performance and reduce clogging risks.
The project included the design of underground, heat-traced and insulated piping connecting the wastewater treatment unit (WTU) to Pond No. 1, ensuring reliable chemical distribution and improved process stability.
An Integrated and Practical Approach
gbi delivered a comprehensive mandate, from data analysis and multidisciplinary engineering (process, mechanical, electrical, civil, and structural) to equipment selection, and the preparation of construction drawings and specifications.
This approach enabled:
- accurate identification of root causes
- optimization of solutions based on existing operations
- structured prioritization and sequencing of interventions with the client
Challenges and Outcomes
The project required balancing performance improvements with real operational constraints. Some issues could not be fully eliminated but were effectively controlled to reduce their frequency and impact on operations.
In addition, coordination with the manufacturing and delivery timelines of specialized piping systems played a key role in overall project planning.
