gbi contributed to the development of a new student residence on the campus of the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO) in Gatineau.
The six-storey building includes 79 housing units, common areas and various services for the student community, providing a comfortable and functional living environment.
Developed as part of the Québec Affordable Housing Program (PHAQ), the project features a compact building footprint to limit land use and preserve the site’s green spaces. It also includes waste management infrastructure, electric vehicle charging stations, an outdoor generator and an air-conditioned building.
A multidisciplinary design approach
gbi provided professional services in infrastructure, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering, from design through to partial construction supervision.
The scope of work included site surveys and analysis, concept development, preparation of plans and specifications, cost estimates, coordination with the client and the professionals involved, and support throughout the tendering process.
Particular attention was paid to the site’s external infrastructure and stormwater management. Oversizing the stormwater pipes increases the network’s storage capacity and helps control the flow discharged into the municipal system.
This project highlights the importance of an integrated engineering approach to ensure consistency between the building, its systems and the surrounding infrastructure.
